Christian Doppler was born at Makartplatz 1 in Salzburg in 1803, the son of a stonemason family. His name now appears in every hospital ultrasound suite, every radar speed trap, and every GPS receiver on earth. The effect he described in 1842 is one of the most consequential ideas ever produced by a person born in this city.

The Story

The Doppler house on Makartplatz 1 still carries two small bronze plaques marking where Christian Doppler was born on 29 November 1803. The building today houses a perfume shop; in the early 19th century it was the workshop of a prosperous stonemason family. Christian was the third of five children. The family trade went back to 1674, and his elder brother was expected to continue it. Christian, however, was too frail for heavy labor.

A local physicist named Simon Stampfer recognized his mathematical talent and steered him toward the Polytechnic Institute in Vienna. Doppler completed his studies in 1825, returned to Salzburg to finish his secondary qualifications, and left for an academic career that eventually took him to Prague, then back to Vienna. In 1842, while teaching at Prague Polytechnic, he published "Uber das farbige Licht der Doppelsterne." The paper proposed that a moving source of waves changes their frequency as observed by a stationary listener: what we now call the Doppler effect.

The physical principle proved to extend far beyond binary stars. Every ambulance siren that changes pitch as it passes is demonstrating Doppler's 1842 insight. So is every hospital ultrasound machine tracking blood flow, every police radar gun measuring car speeds, every GPS receiver compensating for satellite motion, and every telescope measuring the recession velocity of galaxies. Doppler died in Venice in 1853, aged 49, of tuberculosis. He never knew the full reach of what he had described.

Salzburg has honored him with the Christian-Doppler-Klinik, a dedicated exhibition at Haus der Natur, and a statue unveiled in 2003 on the 200th anniversary of his birth.
