Where to Stay in Salzburg

Most people book a hotel and then find out what kind of trip they signed up for. I'd rather do it the other way around. The old town, the Neustadt across the river, the quiet streets under the Untersberg: they are a ten minute walk apart and feel like different cities. Pick the right Salzburg first, then pick the room.

ORIENTATION FIRST

Salzburg is small. The differences are not.

The river runs through the middle. On the south bank sits the old town, the Altstadt, with the cathedral squares, Getreidegasse, and the fortress on the hill above it. On the north bank is the Neustadt, the newer town, where Mirabell Gardens and most of the everyday city live. The two are joined by a handful of bridges you can cross in a few minutes on foot.

Choose the neighborhood for the trip you want at night. During the day you will be everywhere anyway.

That is the whole trick. By day the distances do not matter. In the evening they do. A room in the old town puts you in the postcard but also in the foot traffic and the bells. A room three bridges out gives you a quiet street and a ten minute walk home. Neither is wrong. They are different trips.

SOUTH BANK

Old Town (Altstadt)

First-timers who want the postcard out the door, and short stays. You step out into the squares, the Getreidegasse, the cafe houses. Everything historic is at your feet. Worth knowing: it is busy, the church bells are honest about the hour, and the prettiest rooms cost the most. Cars are mostly kept out, so plan the last hundred metres of luggage.

NORTH BANK

Neustadt around Mirabell

Most people, honestly. Best balance of price, calm, and a three minute bridge. This is where the everyday city is: Mirabell Gardens, normal shops, normal prices, good dinner streets, and the old town one footbridge away. Worth knowing: Linzer Gasse and Schrannenmarkt mornings get lively. A few blocks back from the river is the sweet spot for sleep.

NORTH BANK

Steingasse & the Old Lane

Couples and return visitors who want atmosphere over convenience. A narrow medieval lane pinned against the Kapuzinerberg, candlelit bars, and the fortress lit across the water at night. It is the most romantic address in town. Worth knowing: cobbles, steps, and small old buildings mean small old rooms. Wonderful for two, awkward with a big suitcase or a stroller.

NORTH BANK, WEST

Muelln & the Riverbank

Walkers, runners, and anyone who wants the river out the window for less. A calm stretch of bank under the Augustiner beer hall, with the riverside path right there. You trade ten minutes of walking for real quiet and a better rate. Worth knowing: fewer restaurants on the doorstep, so you will walk in for dinner. The Augustiner garden is a very pleasant problem to have nearby.

SOUTH BANK, BEHIND THE HILL

Nonntal under the Untersberg

Drivers, families, and slow trips that want a neighborhood, not a stage set. Quiet residential streets tucked behind the fortress hill, with fields and the Untersberg in view. Easier parking, more space for your money, and a real local rhythm. Worth knowing: you are out of the centre. Plan on a fifteen minute walk or a short bus, and treat the evening stroll back as part of the charm.

The Grand Riverside Hotel

A formal address on the water with a doorman, a proper breakfast room, and the fortress framed in the window. You are paying for the view and the ritual, and on the right trip it is worth every cent.

Best for anniversaries, slow mornings, a treat trip.

The Old-Town Boutique

A handful of rooms behind a baroque facade, a few flights up, run by people who care. Small, characterful, and right in the thick of it.

Best for couples who want to be inside the storybook.

The Neustadt Apartment

Your own kitchen, a quiet street, the market around the corner. The way I would stay for anything longer than two nights.

Best for families and longer stays.

The Quiet Room under the Hill

A guest room or small pension in Nonntal or Muelln, garden out the back, the Untersberg on the skyline. Space and calm for your money.

Best for drivers and slow travellers.

The Simple Base near the Station

Clean, plain, well-connected, and ten minutes from everything by foot or one bus. No view, no fuss, money kept for the things you came for.

Best for short stays and tight budgets.
