The old town is about 1.5 square kilometres and has 22 churches. This is the order I would walk them, from Holy Trinity on Makartplatz across both banks and up two city mountains to St. Sebastian. Three to four hours, and you see every corner of the old town on the way.
Both city mountains in one walk: the Mönchsberg from Mülln past its viewpoints to the fortress and Nonnberg, down through the old town and over the Mozartsteg, then up the Imbergstiege and round the Kapuzinerberg, the one that feels like a real mountain.
The fifteen sights we mark on the map we hand every guest, in the order I would walk them. It starts on the right bank, crosses into the old town, climbs to the fortress, and comes back over the Mozartsteg. Half a day at a stroll, or a full one if you go inside things.
The two palaces that play the von Trapp house, the gazebo from Sixteen Going on Seventeen, and the mountain behind the opening scene, all south of the old town. Bus 25 connects the four. A bike is more fun, and the first three are part of my daily walk.
The lakes from the opening flight, the church where Maria marries the Captain, and the Do-Re-Mi picnic meadow. Two days out of Salzburg: three stops east in the lake district, easiest by car, and two south in Werfen, forty minutes by train.
The Sound of Music bus tours skip the old town because it is pedestrian-only, so this is the half of the film they miss. Fifteen stops from the Do-Re-Mi steps to the gate of Nonnberg Abbey, in the order I walk them. Two to four hours, depending on how many scenes you re-enact.
The Salzburg Foundation's thirteen artworks in the order that also makes a tour of the old town, from the free tour's meeting point on the main bridge to a steel wave by the Mozartsteg. I don't like modern art. These grew on me anyway.
