Kleinarl is a small traditional village in its own side valley off the Pongau, birthplace of Annemarie Moser-Proell, one of the most decorated alpine ski racers of the twentieth century, and a quiet seasonal destination connected to the Ski Amade network.

The Story

Kleinarl is the kind of place that most Pongau visitors drive past without stopping, and that is broadly fine, because the village prefers its own pace. The Kleinarltal is quiet, traditional, and agricultural in its bones, a valley where summer grazing and winter snow have set the rhythm for longer than tourism has existed. The farmhouses and church that make up the village centre have not been rebuilt into a resort.

What Kleinarl has that no other village in the Salzburg region can claim is Annemarie Moser-Proell. She grew up here, and her record of six overall World Cup titles in alpine skiing, accumulated through the 1970s, was the standard against which every subsequent women’s skier was measured for decades. That someone with that level of achievement came from a village this size and this quiet is one of those facts that says something interesting about how skiing in the alpine world works.

The lift connections into the Ski Amade network mean that winter skiing is genuinely available and the valley is not isolated from the broader Pongau ski region. But the experience of Kleinarl itself is a step removed from the bigger, noisier resort infrastructure of St Johann im Pongau or Wagrain. Grossarl, in the adjacent valley to the west, is the nearest equivalent in character and scale.

Planning

Kleinarl is reached from St Johann im Pongau, about 12 km south by road up the Kleinarltal (grade B: verify exact distance). No through road; visitors come in and return the same way. A car is practical; direct rail access is not available. The ski season runs roughly December through March; summer hiking is available from June through September. Pair with Grossarl for a full sense of the two quiet Pongau side valleys. The connection to Ski Amade lifts makes it possible to ski into the wider network from here.
