The sculptor who turned a horse bath into theatre. Bernhard Michael Mandl created the dynamic horse-taming sculptural group at the Pferdeschwemme (Horse Pond) in 1695, commissioned by Johann Ernst von Thun. A powerful figure wrestling a rearing horse above the central oval basin transforms what was functionally the Archbishop’s horse-watering facility into one of the most theatrical baroque set pieces in Salzburg.
Every visitor walking from Kapitelplatz toward Siegmundsplatz passes it. Few know Mandl’s name.
