Rococo (1772 facade; rebuilt 1616-1618, medieval core)
Most visitors walk straight past Salzburg's old town hall without realising the slender corner building on the Kranzlmarkt hides the oldest clock and the oldest bell in the city, both housed in its tower behind a black-and-gold dial. The city bought the site, an existing burgher house built around a 12th-century tower, in 1407.

A small baroque fountain at the centre of Alter Markt (1734), depicting Saint Florian of Lorch in his traditional pose pouring water to extinguish a burning building. Salzburg's most-photographed example of the ubiquitous Austrian Florian fountain.
1877-1878
Most visitors never see this one. Tucked inside a working senior-care complex in the Riedenburg district, the Herz-Jesu-Asylkirche carries a name that draws Vienna's most important nineteenth-century architect into a quiet Salzburg backstreet.

A sea god watering horses in a landlocked Alpine city: that is the joke buried in the Kapitelschwemme, where a monumental Neptune rears on a fish-tailed seahorse above what was, plainly, a drinking trough.
Contemporary
A life-size bronze of Herbert von Karajan caught mid-rehearsal, both arms forward, baton in his right hand, standing in the garden of the Makartplatz house where the conductor grew up. The popular label calls this his birthplace, but Karajan was actually born in a sanatorium on Franz-Josef-Strasse in 1908. The house is where the family lived.
19th century
A bronze Mozart bust by the Viennese sculptor Edmund Helmer, set on a stone pedestal in the woods of the Kapuzinerberg, roughly 120 metres past the Capuchin monastery on the ridge path.

The Glockenspiel plays three times a day from the Neue Residenz tower: at 7:00, 11:00, and 18:00. Thirty-five bells, cast in Antwerp in 1702, perform a rotating repertoire of pieces. The carillon is pleasant.

A Baroque horse-washing pool on Herbert von Karajan Platz, completed in 1695 for Johann Ernst von Thun, the Prince-Archbishop who was one of Salzburg's most prolific builders.

One of the largest baroque fountains north of the Alps, at the centre of Residenzplatz. Commissioned by Guidobald von Thun and completed in 1661 by Tommaso di Garona. Over eight metres tall, the visual centrepiece of Salzburg's grandest square.
The octagonal white gazebo from The Sound of Music. Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer performed "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" here. Originally at Schloss Leopoldskron, relocated to Hellbrunn in the 1970s. Now enclosed behind a fence after visitors broke ankles attempting to recreate the spinning dance sequence.
