The Bürgergarde is Salzburg's ceremonial civic guard, marching in uniforms copied from mid-18th-century originals, some of the men on horseback. It turns out for the city's old set-pieces: the opening of Rupertikirtag, the start of the Salzburg Festival, the Georgi-Ritt in spring, the Martini feast in November. The historic guard was dissolved in 1851 and refounded in 1979, so this is a revived tradition rather than an unbroken one. It still fires the salute. At Rupertikirtag that comes on the square after the noon Angelus bells. Free to watch.
