Atel Hotel Lasserhof sits within a protected historic villa complex in Salzburg’s Schallmoos district, offering a quieter base than the Altstadt at a practical distance from the main railway station. The surrounding Lasserhof complex is one of the city’s lesser-known heritage buildings.

The Story

The Lasserhof complex has a layered history that the hotel only partly reveals. The core structure is a 17th-century Schloss-type building that passed through aristocratic ownership across several centuries, most notably acquiring its current neo-Baroque facade during renovations by Rupert Freiherr von Imhof in 1867. The facade, with its ornate stucco, pilasters, and hipped roof, echoes the character of the Hellbrunnerallee palaces nearby. The complex is listed as a protected cultural monument.

The wider property includes the Gwandhaus, a wing that houses the Gössl folk costume archive, a collection of traditional Alpine clothing dating to the 1800s that most visitors to Salzburg never encounter. The archive keeps modest weekday hours.

In 2024 Mark Mateschitz acquired the full complex for EUR 28.5 million. The hotel operation continues under the existing management.

For guests, the practical picture is this: Lasserstraße 47 is in the Schallmoos district, approximately 500 metres from the main railway station, and accessible to the Altstadt by bus or bicycle. The neighbourhood is residential and quiet. The hotel itself is set within a courtyard, with garden access and a grand staircase that reflects the building’s historic character. It is a different choice from a central hotel, suited to visitors who prefer calm surroundings and do not need to walk out of the door and immediately be in the tourist circuit.
