Postalm

The Postalm is one of the largest alpine meadow plateaus in Austria, spreading across roughly 25 km2 above Strobl at between 1,400 and 1,600 metres. A working alm with grazing cattle, scattered huts, a central lake, and a network of cycling paths that make it one of the finest family destinations in the Salzkammergut.

The Story

Most alpine terrain in the region either requires a serious ascent to reach or is organised around ski infrastructure. The Postalm is neither. A toll road climbs from Strobl through forest and emerges onto a broad open plateau where the view expands suddenly and the gradient disappears. Cattle graze the pastures through summer. A small lake, the Postalmsee, occupies the centre. Alpine huts serve food at a pace that matches the terrain.

The plateau covers enough ground that cycling makes more sense than walking for most visitors. The cycling network is extensive, mostly flat to gently rolling, and well-suited to families with younger children who would struggle on the steeper terrain elsewhere. Mountain bike and e-bike rental is available on the plateau. The Salzkammergut lake basin is visible to the north and east, with the higher peaks framing the southern horizon.

There is something about the Postalm that resists easy description. It is not dramatic. It does not have the sudden elevation change of a cable car station or the spectacle of a glacier. What it has is space, and a particular quality of alpine light over open meadow in the middle of summer, and the uncomplicated pleasure of cycling across a hillside with no immediate objective. Less restorative than the high peaks would be the wrong way to put it. More restorative, in a different register, is closer to accurate.

The Postalm functions as a traditional working alm alongside its role as a recreation area, which means the farming calendar is visible: cattle arriving in June, the huts opening, the paths becoming busy, then the reverse in autumn. The toll road closes when the season ends, and the plateau returns to winter quiet.

Visiting

The Postalm is reached by car from Strobl via the Postalmstrasse toll road, open approximately May through October. The toll is charged per vehicle at the base. There is no public transport to the plateau; Strobl itself is accessible from Salzburg by car (approximately 40 minutes) or by Wolfgangsee ferry. On the plateau, cycling and walking paths are well-marked; mountain bike and e-bike rental is available near the Postalmsee. Alpine huts serve food during opening hours in season. The terrain is family-friendly and does not require specialist equipment. Parking is available at several points on the plateau. Allow a half day minimum; a full day is comfortable.
