Mozart's Residence
Where he lived from 17 until he left for Vienna at 25. Worth it if you are genuinely interested, or if you bought the Salzburg Card.
- Garden
Mirabell Gardens
The Do-Re-Mi steps, the Pegasus fountain, the dwarves. Free, and one of the best places in town to just sit.
- Museum
Mozart's Birthplace
Three floors: how the family lived, his music, and the instruments and letters. One of the most visited museums in Austria.
- Church
Kollegienkirche (Collegiate Church)
Four altars, one per faculty, no paintings and no benches. The strangest church you will go into here. Free.
- Concert Hall
Großes Festspielhaus
Home of the biggest classical music festival in the world. With a Salzburg Card the 2pm tour is included and gets you inside.
- Abbey
Stift St. Peter (St. Peter's Abbey)
Where Saint Rupert founded Salzburg in 696, still a monastery. Find Nannerl Mozart's grave by the catacombs.
- Church
Franziskanerkirche
Romanesque nave, Gothic ceiling, Baroque altar, all in one room. My favourite alongside the University Church.
- Church
Salzburg Cathedral
The ceiling tells the story from Jerusalem to the Resurrection. Go down to the crypt for the Boltanski shadow play. Not free since 2021.
- Fortress
Hohensalzburg Fortress
If you pay for one thing in Salzburg, make it this. The southern side is where you finally see the Alps.
- Abbey
Nonnberg Abbey
The oldest continuously active nunnery in the world, and the Abbey from the film. Morning prayer at 6:45 if you can hear the nuns sing.
- Monument
Neue Residenz & Glockenspiel
Now the Salzburg Museum, and the 25-metre Panorama painting. Bells at 7, 11 and 6.

Now the DomQuartier, which opens up parts of the Cathedral and St Peter's you cannot otherwise reach.

Mozartplatz
Unveiled 1842, and the moment the Mozart cult began. Locals wanted Saint Michael instead.
- Bridge
Mozartsteg
One of Maria von Trapp's favourite things. Cross it from Mozartplatz and walk straight into Steingasse.
- Cemetery
Sebastiansfriedhof
The Mozart family grave, Wolf Dietrich's tomb, and a secret. One of my favourite places in the city.
