Altenmarkt im Pongau carries the oldest market tradition in the Salzburger Ennstal and anchors the Altenmarkt-Zauchensee ski area, one of the quieter entry points into the massive Ski Amade network. It is a working village first, a resort second, which is why it suits visitors who want Alpine access without the resort pricing.

The Story

The name gives it away. “Altenmarkt” means old market, and the village has held that role in the upper Pongau for longer than most of its neighbours. Market-town status was formalised in December 1948, but the settlement predates that designation as the mother parish of the entire Salzburger Ennstal valley, with documented roots stretching to at least the early medieval period.

The parish church of Maria Geburt in the village centre is a good index of that long history. The building layers Romanesque origins under neo-Gothic expansion from 1867 to 1875, a west tower remodelled in 1764 with the characteristic Zwiebelhaube (onion dome) of the region, and stained-glass windows installed in 1954. The Annakapelle on the market square, founded in 1395, adds another layer. These are working parish buildings, not museum pieces, and they sit within a compact, walkable centre that has not been redeveloped for tourism.

Winter brings the village into its busiest cycle. The Zauchensee ski area, 10 km south, connects into the broader Ski Amade network and offers roughly 99 km of pistes from the resort base. The Erlebnistherme Amadé spa provides an indoor option on bad weather days. Every four years, the Großer Pongauer Perchtenlauf fills the streets with one of the most significant Perchten processions in the Pongau, a folk tradition dating to 1959 that is best experienced without advance knowledge of what to expect.

Planning

Altenmarkt is 65 km southeast of Salzburg, roughly 45 minutes by train on the Tauern Railway. The Zauchensee ski area is accessible by regional bus in about 15 minutes from the village. For the ski area, a day pass covers both Altenmarkt and Zauchensee; the higher resort gets notably more snow than the valley floor. Summer hiking in the surrounding valleys uses the village as a base for trails toward the Totes Gebirge. Combine with Radstadt for a fuller Pongau stay. The Saturday morning market in the village centre runs year-round.
