Elixhausen is a quietly charming village 10 km northeast of Salzburg, best known for the Romantik Spa Hotel Gmachl and an autumn festival calendar that packs the village square from August through November. It sits in the rolling Flachgau countryside where the Mattig river takes its source, small enough to feel genuinely local but polished enough to reward a half-day visit.

The Story

Elixhausen does not announce itself. The village has no landmark visible from a distance, no single famous church or ruin that draws the tour buses. What it has instead is a quality of unhurried rural life that has coexisted with proximity to Salzburg for centuries without being consumed by it.

The Romantik Spa Hotel Gmachl is the clearest expression of this: a historic inn that has evolved into a spa and gourmet address while keeping the kitchen garden and the farmhouse courtyard intact. The herb garden supplies the breakfast table; the day spa occupies a converted outbuilding. It is the kind of place that rewards lingering rather than ticking off.

Beyond the hotel, the village’s identity is built around two older structures and one seasonal rhythm. Gut Ursprung, a stone manor built in the early 1500s by a merchant family who wanted a depot for Alpine timber, later became the foundation for HBLA Ursprung, an agricultural school that still occupies the estate. The founding story links the village’s farming character to something deliberate and long-running rather than merely inherited.

The seasonal rhythm is the Bauernherbst, the harvest festival season that runs from August through November across the Salzburg countryside. In Elixhausen it is unusually concentrated: the Kirtag on a late-August Sunday, the Weinfest at Gut Oberholz in early September, and a regional producers’ market a week later. For visitors traveling in autumn, these events give the village a pulse that most of its neighbors cannot match in the same time window.

The village has its own S-Bahn stop at Hallwang-Elixhausen on the line between Salzburg and Freilassing, so a car is not required. The round trip from Salzburg by train takes well under half an hour.

Elixhausen is about 10 km northeast of Salzburg, reachable in 15 minutes by car or by S-Bahn (Hallwang-Elixhausen station on the Salzburg-Freilassing line). The drive from the city takes you through the gently rolling Flachgau countryside along routes that pass Hallwang just to the south.
