Leogang is the quiet end of one of Austria’s biggest ski areas, a Pinzgau village that plugs into the Saalbach-Hinterglemm Skicircus via lift while keeping its own unhurried pace. In summer it reinvents itself as one of Europe’s top mountain biking destinations, hosting UCI World Cup downhill races on the Asitz slopes above the village.

The Story

The Asitz mountain is what defines Leogang’s geography. From the summit you can see the Steinernes Meer karst plateau to the east, the Hochkönig massif to the south, and the layered ranges of the Leoganger Steinberge around you: a panorama that most visitors to Saalbach-Hinterglemm never bother to look for because they are on the other side of the mountain.

That position, tucked into a quieter valley while sharing the same lift infrastructure as one of Austria’s most famous resorts, is Leogang’s core offer. The skiing is the full Skicircus, but the village itself stays calm. Families and skiers who want a lower price point and less noise have known this for years.

Before the ski lifts there was the mine. Silver and copper were pulled from these limestone mountains as far back as the 10th century, and the wealth funded Gothic art commissions that now sit in the Mining and Gothic Museum in the Hütten quarter. The Schaubergwerk offers a one-hour underground tour through the original tunnels, still at their original cramped 1.4-metre height. The Knappenkapelle chapel nearby, built in 1770, was where miners prayed to Saint Anna before each shift. These two sites give Leogang a historical layer that most alpine ski villages lack.

The summer switch from ski resort to mountain bike venue is complete and serious. The Epic Bikepark runs UCI Mountain Bike World Cup events and has been redesigned repeatedly to keep up with elite racing standards. The trail network connects across seven mountains to Saalbach-Hinterglemm and Fieberbrunn, giving riders over 100 km of lines. For those not racing, the summer hiking on the Asitz is gentle and well-signed, with the Pirzbichlweg offering Steinernes Meer views from the valley floor.

Planning

From Salzburg, Leogang is reachable by train in roughly 1 hour 30 minutes; the village has its own train station. By car take the A1 then B311 via Lofer, approximately 90 minutes. In winter the lift connection into the Skicircus is the main draw: one lift pass covers the full Saalbach-Hinterglemm network. In summer the Epic Bikepark season runs June to October, with the Asitz cable car providing uplift. The Mining Museum and Schaubergwerk are open year-round; the underground tour runs approximately one hour. Leogang pairs naturally with Saalbach-Hinterglemm for skiing and with Saalfelden as the regional town for services. Altitude of the village is around 800 metres; the Asitz summit reaches 1,826 metres.
