Obertraun sits on the opposite shore of the Hallstatter See from Hallstatt, quieter and less photographed, but it is where the vertical experience of the Salzkammergut begins. The Story
Hallstatt gets the attention. Obertraun, directly across the lake, has been supplying the less-publicized parts of the same story for centuries.
The village's medieval economy was built on timber. The forested slopes above the southern shore fed the salt operations at Hallstatt with the wood needed to heat the brine vats. The Traun river carried logs from the upper valley down to the Sudhaus brewhouse. When the logging era faded, what remained was a quiet lakeside village of around 750 people, separated from Hallstatt's administration in 1921 after sharing governance since the Middle Ages.
The modern reason to come here is altitude. The Dachstein Krippenstein cable car leaves from the village and climbs to 2,109 m on the Dachstein plateau. At the summit, the Five Fingers platform extends over the edge of a sheer limestone cliff on five steel arms, each at a different angle. The drop beneath is approximately 400 m. It is not for everyone.
The Dachstein Giant Ice Cave are on the same plateau. They are among the largest ice caves accessible to visitors anywhere in the world, formed over millennia as glacial meltwater carved through the limestone. The formations inside are genuinely strange: ice columns, frozen cascades, and chambers large enough to hold an orchestra.
For anyone visiting Hallstatt and finding it crowded and photographed from every angle, Obertraun is what sits behind the postcard. The same lake, seen from a different shore, and above it, the Dachstein itself.
Planning
Obertraun is on the eastern shore of the Hallstatter See, approximately 5 km from Hallstatt by road. The Salzkammergut road connects both villages. Buses run from Bad Ischl and Hallstatt. The Dachstein Krippenstein cable car operates from approximately May to October; the exact season varies by snow conditions. The Dachstein Giant Ice Cave are also seasonal. Allow a full day if combining the cable car with the ice caves. The Five Fingers platform is exposed at altitude; bring a layer. The lake is accessible year-round.
