Obertrum am See is a compact village on the Obertrumer See, about 15 km north of Salzburg, home to the Trumer Privatbrauerei and its Trumer Pils. The lake, the cycling circuit, and the brewery give this small Flachgau community more to offer than its size would suggest.

The Story

The Obertrumer See is the southernmost of three connected lakes in the northern Flachgau, joined by channels to the Grabensee and Mattsee Lake a few kilometers north. Obertrum sits at the southeastern corner of the lake, close enough to Salzburg that it functions as part of the city’s informal recreation belt: the kind of place you reach on a bike or in a car on a summer afternoon.

The Trumer Privatbrauerei is what makes Obertrum distinct. Trumer Pils is brewed here, a pilsner with a real production history and a presence in regional gastronomy that goes beyond the typical local beer. The brewery has operated in Obertrum for generations; the building and its context in this particular northern Flachgau village is part of what defines the beer’s identity. Brewery visits and tours are available in some form, though arrangements should be confirmed before planning a specific visit.

The three-lake cycling loop is the other main draw. From Obertrum, the circuit runs north through channels and paths to the Grabensee, then on to Mattsee Destination at the northern end, before looping back south. The route is flat, well-suited to casual riders, and gives a clear sense of the northern Flachgau’s lake landscape: open, agricultural, and calm. The loop typically takes 2 to 3 hours.

Planning

Obertrum is roughly 15 km north of Salzburg, about 20 minutes by car on the B1 or regional roads. Regional bus services connect to the city, though frequency is limited; check schedules. The three-lake cycling circuit connects Obertrum, Grabensee, and Mattsee Destination; a bike rented in Salzburg can cover the full loop comfortably. The Trumer Privatbrauerei is the natural anchor for a visit; contact the brewery in advance to confirm tour availability. Summer is the primary season for swimming and cycling.
