Untersberg Day Hike

The Untersberg is the mountain Salzburg residents look at every day from the Altstadt. The cable car makes the summit plateau accessible in 8 minutes. Up there, the view covers 13 lakes, the Berchtesgaden valley across the German border, and Salzburg laid out below. It earns its reputation.

The Story

The Untersberg has been part of Salzburg’s identity for longer than most of its famous buildings. The Romans quarried its marble. The Prince-Archbishops used the same stone in their Baroque churches. The mountain carries old legends: Charlemagne sleeping inside it, dwarf-like Untersberger Mandln keeping watch, ravens deciding when the emperor wakes. Modern seekers still gather at the so-called “dragon hole” on the plateau.

The practical version is more straightforward. The Untersbergbahn cable car departs from St. Leonhard in Grödig, 10 km south of Salzburg, climbs 1,300 vertical meters in 8 minutes, and deposits hikers at the Geiereck at 1,776 m. The landscape above the treeline is open limestone karst: bare rock, alpine flowers, snow persisting well into May. Conditions change faster than in the valley; proper gear is not optional.

From the top station, the full cross-border traverse to the Berchtesgadener Hochthron takes 2-3 hours and crosses into Germany. The shorter version, ridge walks with views in every direction, is manageable in a half day. Both are different experiences. I have done the traverse in summer when the plateau flowers were still out, and it is one of the better alpine days within easy reach of the city.

• Cost: Cable car return ~€22-28 adults. Salzburg Card: one free ride.
• Schedule: May-October. Cable car: 8:30 am-5:30 pm (May-September). Check untersbergbahn.at for exact dates.
• Getting there: Bus 25 or 28 from Salzburg to St. Leonhard, Grödig (~25-40 min).
• Tips: Proper boots essential. Check weather: the plateau is exposed. Early start recommended in summer; queues build at the cable car by mid-morning.
