The massif visible from every south-facing window in Salzburg. Its Salzburg-side summit, the Salzburger Hochthron, reaches 1,853 m; the true high point, the Berchtesgadener Hochthron at 1,972 m, sits across the border on the Bavarian side. Reachable in eight minutes by cable car from Grödig, or on foot via several marked trails.
The Story
The Bavarian border runs through the Untersberg's summit ridge, and the mountain divides accordingly: two-thirds German territory, one-third Austrian, with the limestone karst system underneath recognising no political lines at all. More than 400 caves thread the massif, including the Riesending Cave which descends 1,149 m into the rock.
The mountain carries one of the most durable legends in the German-speaking world. Charlemagne, or in some versions Barbarossa, sleeps inside, surrounded by his court, waiting for Germany's hour of need. The version that sets this scene here rather than in the Kyffhäuser in Thuringia has been recorded in Salzburg folklore for centuries.
The marble extracted from the Untersberg's northern flank built a significant portion of Baroque Salzburg. Salzburg Cathedral's facade, the ornate fountain on Domplatz, the Vienna Opera House's grand staircases, and parts of the Walhalla memorial near Regensburg all use Untersberg stone. Roman quarrying on the site dates to the 2nd century AD.
The Untersbergbahn cable car, constructed in 1961, climbs from 456 m at the valley station in Grödig to 1,776 m at Geiereck in about eight minutes. The longest unsupported section of the rope spans 1.5 km, leaving a 286 m gap between cabin and ground. The Untersberg appears in the opening helicopter shot of The Sound of Music, the camera sweeping north over the ridge toward Salzburg.
Visiting
The cable car runs from the valley station at Grödig (bus connection from Salzburg). From the upper Geiereck station, short walks access the plateau and panoramic views over Salzburg, the Bavarian Alps, and the Salzkammergut. The Zeppezauerhaus mountain hut at the top serves food. The true summit, Berchtesgadener Hochthron at 1,972 m, requires a further hike of roughly 1.5 hours from Geiereck. For walkers starting from the valley: the Reitsteig (moderate, 2.5-3.5 hours from Glanegg parking) is the most accessible route. The Dopplersteig is rated difficult and takes around 6 hours. The mountain plateau hosts 160 km of marked paths. No entry fee for the mountain itself; cable car ticket required for the ride.
