Salzburg’s most celebrated painter of the 19th century. Hans Makart’s enormous historical and allegorical canvases, lush, theatrical, intensely colourful, set the visual tone for the entire Viennese Ringstrasse era. So dominant was his influence that the term Makart-Stil entered the language.
Makartplatz, the square where Mozart’s Residence stands, is named in his honour. The pedestrian bridge that once carried his name, the Makartsteg, has been officially renamed the Marko Feingold Steg. He died in Vienna at just 44.
