The master sculptor of the Salzburg Salzkammergut. Johann Meinrad Guggenbichler came from Einsiedeln in Switzerland but settled permanently at Mondsee, spending his entire working life creating altars, statues, and sculptural programmes for the churches of the Mondsee and St. Gilgen area.
The Mondsee church is famous as the location of the wedding scene in The Sound of Music (1965). Guggenbichler's baroque sculptures stand in the background of one of the most-filmed church interiors in the world, seen by millions who have no idea who carved them.
