The man who showed Europe what Salzburg looked like. Johann Michael Sattler created the monumental 360-degree Panorama of Salzburg (completed 1829), painted from the Monchsberg. The panorama was exhibited to paying audiences across Europe and America throughout the 19th century, making Salzburg's silhouette one of the most widely seen urban images of the era, long before photography existed.
The original is now preserved in the Salzburg Museum on Mozartplatz. It remains one of the most important visual documents of the city before the railway age.
