A biblical museum and educational exhibition exploring the history, text, and cultural significance of the Bible. Part of the Archdiocese of Salzburg's educational offering.

Burg Mauterndorf

Built c. 1253

Burg Mauterndorf in the Lungau controls the Tauern pass route through a narrow valley where it was impossible to bypass the castle without paying the toll. The Archbishops of Salzburg held this position for centuries, collecting passage fees that helped fund Salzburg's Baroque building program.

Dokumentationszentrum Obersalzberg

The Obersalzberg above Berchtesgaden was the second seat of Nazi power after Berlin. Hitler acquired a house here in 1928; by the mid-1930s the entire mountainside had been seized, farmed-out residences demolished, and rebuilt as a complex of government buildings, SS barracks, and underground bunkers.

Domgrabungsmuseum

An underground archaeological museum three metres below the Cathedral floor, revealing the foundations of two earlier predecessor cathedrals and Roman-era structures from Iuvavum.

DomQuartier

Opened 2014

The DomQuartier is a museum circuit through the former residence and ceremonial spaces of Salzburg's Prince-Archbishops, connecting the Residenz galleries, the Dommuseum, St. Peter's Abbey Museum, and the cathedral balcony via elevated walkways above the old town rooftops.

Festung Hohenwerfen

Founded 1077

A spectacular medieval fortress above the Salzach gorge near Werfen, 40 km south of Salzburg. Founded in 1077 by Gebhard von Helfenstein, the same year as Hohensalzburg Fortress. Renowned for daily falconry displays in summer. Also a filming location for Where Eagles Dare (1968). A rewarding day trip from Salzburg.

Folklore Museum Salzburg

A museum dedicated to Salzburg's folk culture, traditional crafts, rural life, and regional heritage. An important counterweight to the tourist narrative of Mozart and the festival.

Freilichtmuseum Großgmain

One of the largest open-air museums in Central Europe. Over 100 historic farm buildings, barns, mills, and alpine dwellings relocated from across Salzburg State, creating a complete picture of rural alpine life from the 16th to early 20th century.

Georg-Trakl-Haus

The birthplace of poet Georg Trakl at Waagplatz in the Altstadt, now a research institute, archive, and memorial centre dedicated to his life and work. Trakl (1887-1914) is one of the most important German-language Expressionist poets.

Hallstatt Museum

The Hallstatt Museum, officially the Welterbemuseum Hallstatt (World Heritage Museum), holds the finds from one of the most important prehistoric archaeological sites in Central Europe.

Hangar-7

Red Bull built a glass-and-steel hangar at Salzburg Airport in 2003 to display its aircraft collection and contemporary art, and added one of Austria's more ambitious restaurants in the same space. The building by architect Volkmar Burgstaller is a curved glass shell that makes the vintage aircraft and Formula 1 cars visible from the outside at night.

Haus der Natur

The Haus der Natur in Salzburg is a natural history and science museum that has been running since 1924 in a former Ursuline convent on Museumsplatz, and it has grown large enough to fill a serious half-day.

Hofbräu Kaltenhausen

Founded 1475

The oldest brewery in Salzburg State, founded 1475 near Hallein. Predates Stiegl by almost two decades. Beer garden on the Salzach. Cooperage Museum and brewery tours. Fifteen minutes from Salzburg by train.

Kaiservilla

The summer residence of Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Elisabeth Sisi. The place Franz Joseph described as "heaven on earth." He signed the declaration of war against Serbia here on 28 July 1914. The villa is partly still owned by Habsburg descendants. The park and guided tours are open to visitors.

Keltenmuseum Hallein

Most Salzburg day-trippers stop at the salt mine and never make it to the museum fifteen minutes away that explains why the mine existed in the first place.

Lehárvilla Bad Ischl

The villa where Franz Lehar lived and died in 1948, preserved as a museum. Lehár spent his summers in Bad Ischl and composed many operettas here, including revisions to The Merry Widow.

Marionette Museum

A specialist museum inside Hohensalzburg Fortress dedicated to the art of marionette puppetry. Documents the history of the Salzburg Marionette Theatre, founded in 1913 by Anton Aicher.

Mauthausen Memorial

Mauthausen was a Category III Nazi concentration camp, the designation reserved for prisoners deemed beyond rehabilitation and therefore marked for the harshest treatment and certain death. Between 1938 and 1945, more than 190,000 people were imprisoned here; at least 90,000 were killed.

Mozart House St. Gilgen

The house in St. Gilgen on the Wolfgangsee where Anna Maria Pertl, Mozart's mother, was born in 1720. Nannerl Mozart lived here after her marriage to the local magistrate. One of the genuinely under-visited Mozart family sites.

Baroque

The third floor of Getreidegasse 9 is where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born on 27 January 1756, and where he spent the first seventeen years of his life.

Mozart's Residence

1773

The larger apartment on Makartplatz where the Mozart family moved in 1773. Leopold Mozart lived here until his death in 1787. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart lived here until his permanent departure for Vienna in 1781.

Museum der Moderne Mönchsberg

Opened 2004

Salzburg's modern and contemporary art museum sits on top of a limestone cliff directly above the Baroque old town, which is one of the odder institutional juxtapositions in Austrian cultural geography.

Panorama Museum

A dedicated museum housing the monumental circular panorama of Salzburg painted by Johann Michael Sattler between 1825 and 1829. Approximately 26 metres wide and 15 metres tall, capturing the city before industrialisation.

Residenz

Baroque

The official palace and seat of power of the Prince-Archbishops for over 200 years. Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau rebuilt it in grand baroque style. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart performed for the Archbishop in these very rooms. Troger's frescoes look down from the state rooms. Today the Prunkraume and Residenzgalerie are open to visitors. Directly on Residenzplatz.

Rupertinum

The city-centre venue of the Museum der Moderne, specialising in works on paper: prints, drawings, watercolours, and photography from the 20th and 21st centuries. Walking distance from the Festival halls.

Salzbergwerk Berchtesgaden

Salt has been extracted from this mountain above Berchtesgaden since 1517, making it one of the oldest continuously operating mines in central Europe.

Salzburg Baroque Museum

Formerly housed in the Orangery of Mirabell Gardens, assembling an exceptional collection of baroque sketches, oil studies, and preparatory drawings. Collection now in storage pending a future permanent home.

Salzburg Christmas Museum

A private museum at Mozartplatz dedicated entirely to historic Christmas decorations, ornaments, and festive traditions. One of the most unusual specialist museums in Austria.

Salzburg Museum

The Salzburg Museum is closed for full renovation until approximately spring 2027. It is Salzburg's main museum of city history and culture, housed in the Neue Residenz on Mozartplatz. Permanent exhibitions trace the city from prehistoric salt trading through the Prince-Archbishop era to modernity.

Salzwelten Altaussee

The Altaussee salt mine carries a specific historical weight that sets it apart from the other Salzwelten show mines: in 1945, it was the hiding place for thousands of artworks looted by the Nazis from across occupied Europe, including works by Jan van Eyck, Michelangelo, and Vermeer.

Salzwelten Hallein

The Hallein salt mine on the Dürrnberg plateau above town has been in operation since roughly 600 BC, and at one point it was the economic engine that made the entire Salzach valley worth controlling.

Salzwelten Hallstatt

Archaeologists have found evidence of salt extraction in the mountain above Hallstatt going back roughly 7,000 years, which makes this either the world's oldest or one of the oldest documented salt mines depending on how you count.

Schloss Moosham

Founded 13th century

A dramatic medieval castle in the Lungau with a sinister history. A site of witch trials in the late 17th century, one of the most intense periods of witch persecution in the region. Now privately owned by the Wilczek family and open to visitors. One of the most atmospheric and historically layered castles in the Salzburg region.

Seeschloss Ort

A lake castle connected to shore by a 123-meter wooden bridge, the emblem of Gmunden and the Traunsee. The castle dates from the 10th century. The Landschloss (shore castle) adjacent hosts exhibitions. The Seeschloss itself is a wedding venue. The bridge and castle composition is one of the most photographed in Upper Austria.

Sound of Music World

Opened 2018

A private museum dedicated to the real story of the Trapp family, opened 2018 adjacent to Villa Trapp. Centres on the actual family rather than the film locations. More thoughtful and personal than its modest size suggests. Included in the Salzburg Card.

Spielzeugmuseum

A charming museum of historic toys and games housed in the old Bürgerspital complex, adjacent to the Bürgerspitalkirche near Getreidegasse. Particularly popular with families.

Stefan Zweig Centre Salzburg

A dedicated research institute, museum, and event space celebrating Stefan Zweig, one of the most widely translated writers of the 20th century and a figure closely associated with Salzburg. Housed in the Palais Kieselburg at Schwarzstraße 26.

Stiegl Brauwelt

Established 1492

The visitor centre and museum of Stiegl, Austria's largest private brewery, established in 1492. The Brauwelt opened in 1995 as a 5,000 m² interactive beer experience: a 270-degree brew cinema, guided production tours through the working brewhouse, included tastings, and a Bräugasthof restaurant. Located in the Maxglan district, near Salzburg Airport.

WasserSpiegel

An interactive exhibition dedicated to water: its science, its history in the Salzburg region, and its cultural significance. Particularly engaging for families and younger visitors.
