The Altes Rathaus on the Kranzlmarkt is Salzburg's old town hall, a corner building distinguished by a black-and-gold clock dial on its tower. Behind that dial sit the oldest clock and the oldest bell in the city. The city bought the medieval house in 1407, rebuilt it between 1616 and 1618, and gave it the Rococo façade it still wears, a late, lighter phase of the Baroque, in the 1770s. The mayor and council moved to the Schloss Mirabell in 1947, but the building still works: a gallery downstairs, council rooms and offices above. The exterior is free to view. Stand near the Alter Markt for the best angle on the clock face.
