An immersive biblical exhibition inside a 1950s church on Plainstrasse, funded by the Archdiocese of Salzburg. Not a conventional museum: visitors walk through recreated environments rather than past display cases.

The Story

Bible World Salzburg occupies the Elisabethkirche at Plainstraße 42a, a postwar church building that has been converted into approximately 1,000 m² of biblical exhibition space. The entry point is a giant ear. That is the first signal that this is not a conventional museum.

The exhibition is built around sensory and participatory experience rather than scholarly presentation. A recreated Oriental Market fills part of the space with the smells of spice and the textures of ancient trade goods. A large Mediterranean floor map traces the journeys of Paul with lit routes across three missionary trips. Immersive corridors simulate episodes from the life of Jesus, requiring visitors to move through unsteady, dark spaces rather than stand and read.

The project is funded and supported by the Archdiocese of Salzburg, reflecting the city’s deep Catholic heritage. It is designed primarily for families, school groups, and visitors who approach biblical history through a faith lens, though the exhibition’s physical scale and design make it accessible to curious visitors regardless of belief.

Admission is approximately EUR 11 for adults and EUR 5.50 for children aged 4-15, and free with the Salzburg Card. Located outside the Altstadt, around 10 minutes on foot from the main train station.

Plainstrasse 42a, in the Salzburg-Elisabeth district. Around 10 minutes on foot from the main station, or by Lokalbahn. Open Monday-Tuesday and Thursday-Saturday 10:00-18:00, Sunday 11:00-18:00; closed Wednesdays. Last entry at 17:00. Check bibelwelt.at for current prices and any holiday closures before visiting. The Salzburg Card covers admission. A visit takes between one and two hours.
