There is no body inside the cloak. This bronze under the southern arch of Salzburg Cathedral is an empty hooded mantle with the figure simply absent. Czech-Austrian sculptor Anna Chromy made it in 1999 as a Pietà, an image of mourning, commissioned by the Prince-Archbishop and inspired by Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Hofmannsthal’s Jedermann. Its quieter name is the Cloak of Conscience. Most people walk straight past it on the way between the cathedral square and Kapitelplatz. Free, always accessible.
