Anna Chromy was a Czech-German sculptor whose Cloak of Conscience, an empty hooded bronze mantle with no body inside, stands under the southern arch of Salzburg Cathedral. The Salzburg cast, titled Pietà and made in 1999, turns its missing figure into the whole subject: the cloak is hollow, and the person it should hold is simply not there.

The Story

Anna Chromy was born in Český Krumlov in 1940. Her family was expelled to Vienna at the end of the Second World War, and she later trained as a painter in Paris before a life-threatening accident in 1992 shifted her practice toward sculpture. Her signature work, the Cloak of Conscience, is not a figure at all. It is an empty hooded mantle, cast in bronze, with no body and no head inside. The hollow cloak stands for the person who has gone, and that absence is the entire point.

Casts of the Cloak have been placed across Europe: at Prague’s National Theatre, in Pietrasanta in Tuscany where she carved the marble, near the Vatican, at Olympia in Greece, and in Salzburg. The Salzburg cast, titled Pietà locally, was made in 1999 as a religious commission by Prince-Archbishop Georg Eder, the head of the Salzburg church. It is not one of the Salzburg Foundation’s Walk of Modern Art pieces. It is a cathedral work, set under the southern arch of Salzburg Cathedral on the short passage between Domplatz and Kapitelplatz.

The Salzburg Pietà reaches into the city’s own cultural memory. It draws on Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni and on Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s Jedermann, the morality play that the Salzburg Festival stages each summer on the cathedral square just outside. The base carries an inscription that states the theme without ornament: “The empty mantle as a symbol of that which survives us: the love we gave, the works we created, the suffering we bore.” Set against the Baroque cathedral, all gold, declaration, and presence, the hollow cloak is the quiet opposite, and that contrast is the reason it stops people who notice it.

Chromy died in Monaco in 2021. The Salzburg Pietà remains free to visit, always accessible under the cathedral arch.
