Heart of Joy

Snapshot

Salzburg’s longest-running plant-based café, open since 2003. Heart of Joy serves Indian curries, Central European vegetarian dishes, and 50 Ayurvedic teas near Mirabell Palace. In a city built on pork and dairy, it has survived through quality and quiet dedication.

The Story

Heart of Joy opened in 2003, which makes it a veteran by any standard, and a particularly durable one in Salzburg. The city’s food culture runs on roast pork, dairy, schnitzel, and beer. A fully plant-based café that has kept its doors open here for more than two decades, earned consistent recognition, and built a loyal local following is doing something right.

The café is run by the Heart of Joy Verein, a non-profit founded by Piyavadini and Priyavadin Reisecker. Priyavadin ran meditation courses at the Sri Chinmoy Centre from the 1990s; Piyavadini is a trained homeopath and psychotherapist. The connection to Sri Chinmoy, the Indian spiritual teacher known for his peace concerts and ultra-distance running events, is not decorative. The café’s atmosphere, its menu philosophy, and the free meditation classes held on the premises all reflect that background. The pace is unhurried by design.

The menu is entirely plant-based and genuinely eclectic: Indian curries, parsley dumplings in horseradish sauce, Thai mushroom curry, vegan sushi, Styrian vegetable dishes. Fifty Ayurvedic teas. Organic and fair-trade sourcing throughout. The prices are modest enough that this is not a special-occasion destination but a genuine everyday option, which is part of why it has lasted.

Alongside Spicy Spices, Heart of Joy is where plant-based dining in Salzburg is taken seriously.
