Spicy Spices
Snapshot
Spicy Spices is one of Salzburg’s pioneering vegetarian and vegan restaurants, serving organic North Indian-influenced food at Wolf-Dietrich-Straße 1 near Mirabell. It was the place that proved serious plant-based cooking had a permanent audience in this city.
The Story
Salzburg’s food culture runs deep on Schnitzel, Tafelspitz, and Brettljause. That is not a criticism, just a fact. For visitors who do not eat meat or dairy, the options can feel narrow, particularly inside the historic core. Spicy Spices solved that problem a long time ago.
The restaurant sits at Wolf-Dietrich-Straße 1 on the right bank, a short walk from Mirabell and Linzer Gasse. Owner Suresh runs an organic kitchen with a North Indian orientation: curries, lentil dishes, samosas with mango chutney, and daily specials that rotate. Everything is vegetarian; most dishes are vegan. The ingredients are bio-certified, and the price range, mostly EUR 9-16 for mains, is reasonable by Salzburg standards.
What makes this restaurant worth knowing is not just the food. It is the longevity and the role it has played. Spicy Spices established early that there was a serious appetite for plant-based cooking in a city whose restaurants can trend formal and meat-focused. It built a loyal following among residents long before plant-based dining became a mainstream conversation, and that loyalty is reflected in how consistently well-regarded it remains.
The space is modest: a small indoor room and, in summer, a garden with twenty seats under trees. Service is warm. The atmosphere is informal, which is not always a given in Salzburg’s restaurant culture. Cash only; there is no card terminal.
