The Story

A small, quietly beautiful lake in the hills above Faistenau, roughly 20 kilometres southeast of Salzburg in the Flachgau. Surrounded by forest and meadow, the Hintersee has the intimacy and stillness of a place that has escaped development: no large hotels, no motorboats, no crowds. The water is clean and swimmable. A local favourite precisely because it offers what the bigger lakes no longer can: peace. One of those places that Salzburg residents mention quietly to people they trust.

Visiting

Freely accessible year-round. No admission charge. Swimmable in summer; clean, clear water. No motorboats; the surface stays calm. Path along parts of the shoreline. Approximately 20 km southeast of Salzburg, around 25 minutes by car. Faistenau is the nearest village.
