Faistenau is a quiet hill village east of Salzburg, sitting above the Fuschlsee basin in forested terrain that feels more like the inner Salzkammergut than the suburban Flachgau. Its main draw is the Faistenauer Hintersee, a small, clear alpine lake that most visitors to the region never find.

The Story

The Fuschlsee area draws visitors to its namesake lake and to Schloss Fuschl on the northern shore, but Faistenau sits apart from that circuit, higher in the hills and noticeably quieter. The village itself is small, a cluster of farms and houses in rolling forested landscape, with the character of a working mountain community rather than a resort.

The Faistenauer Hintersee lies a short distance south of the village center. Compared to the Fuschlsee, which sits on the busy road east from Salzburg City, the Hintersee is genuinely off the main path: smaller, less developed, and surrounded closely by forest. On a clear day the reflections are good; in summer the water is cold but swimmable.

From Faistenau, hiking trails fan out across the forested ridges that separate the Fuschlsee basin from the Mondsee basin to the north and the Wolfgangsee valley to the east. The elevation gain from the village is modest, but the terrain gives views that open up considerably once above the treeline on the higher routes.

Faistenau has stayed largely free of the hotel and restaurant development that came to the lakeside villages. That restraint is what defines it for the visitors who seek it out: a hill village with a real alpine lake nearby and no particular pressure to perform as a tourist destination.

Planning

Faistenau is most easily reached by car from Salzburg, roughly a 25-minute drive east via the B158. No direct public transport connection to the Hintersee exists; a bike or car is needed from the village center. The area combines well with Hof bei Salzburg and the Fuschlsee shore on the same day loop. Summer is the season for hiking and swimming; the trails are snow-covered in winter and require appropriate gear. No advance booking is needed for the Hintersee itself.
