Hotel Heffterhof is a four-star eco-certified property on the eastern hillside below Mönchsberg, set in a garden with views toward Gaisberg and the fortress skyline. Its sustainability credentials are genuine: Austrian Ecolabel number 744, 100% renewable power, and an organic breakfast sourced from farms in the Tennengau and Pinzgau.

The Story

The hotel sits at Maria-Cebotari-Straße 1-7, roughly 2 km from the historic centre in a quiet residential zone below Mönchsberg. It is not a characterful old building in the Altstadt sense, but it offers something different: clean, well-organised accommodation with a serious commitment to sustainability in a city where “eco” branding is often more marketing than substance.

The 56 rooms were comprehensively renovated in 2016. A subset of rooms, the Baumkronenzimmer (“treetop rooms”), are built from locally sourced larch, cotton, and natural stone, with private balconies overlooking the garden and the Kapuzinerberg-Gaisberg ridge beyond. The organic breakfast buffet holds BIO-Austria certification, with produce drawn from within a 30 km radius: smoked fish from the Salzach River, meats from Pinzgau family farms, dairy from Tennengau producers.

The hotel also operates a substantial conference facility with 14 rooms across approximately 1,000 m², making it a practical choice for business events as well as leisure travel. O-Bus Line 6 stops directly outside; the Altstadt is reachable by bus in 10 minutes.

Maria-Cebotari-Straße 1-7, eastern slope below Mönchsberg. O-Bus Line 6 at the door. Free parking. Organic breakfast at around €29 per person. Pets welcome. The upper-floor balcony rooms have the best Gaisberg views.
