Meininger Salzburg

Snapshot

The Salzburg property of the European Meininger chain, offering dormitories and private rooms under one roof in the Schallmoos district. 24-hour reception, shared kitchen, rooftop terrace, and budget pricing make it the city’s primary option for interrailers, groups, and solo travellers who want social infrastructure at hostel rates.

The Story

Meininger Hotels built its Salzburg property in 2011, assembling it from three existing structures on Fürbergstraße 18-20 in the Schallmoos district, a residential neighbourhood sitting between the main station and Salzburg’s eastern fringes. The location is practical without being scenic: about 1.6 km from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof, 20 minutes on foot to the Altstadt, and close enough to the city centre that a short tram ride resolves the distance comfortably.

The format is Meininger’s standard hybrid: dormitories and private rooms in the same building, connected by shared spaces that include a kitchen, a bar, a laundry, luggage storage, and a rooftop terrace with city views. The combination targets what the brand calls “flashpackers,” a category somewhere between backpacker and mid-range traveller who wants the social energy of a hostel and the cleanliness of a hotel room, without paying full hotel rates for either.

Reception operates around the clock, which matters for arrivals on late trains. Breakfast costs around EUR 7. The bar serves coffee and drinks during the day. Wi-Fi reaches the terrace. The property applies a cleaning-on-request policy during stays as part of a broader sustainability approach.

What Meininger Salzburg offers is a clear social infrastructure and predictable budget pricing that no other property in the IS portfolio matches. For solo travellers on extended trips, interrailers changing at Salzburg Hauptbahnhof, and groups who need multiple beds at a manageable total cost, it is the obvious recommendation.
