The Story

The building’s history is modest and specific in the way that family properties often are. Harald Thallmayer built the original structure in 1948 on a lot belonging to his family, naming it after his mother, Elisabeth Weickl, who had died four years earlier. The house was initially built for a family housekeeper who had nowhere else to go. When she died shortly after, the Thallmayer family leased the property to the Grims family, who ran it as a modest guesthouse for three generations.

Sibylle Thallmayer took it back in 1994 and rebuilt it into a functioning small hotel over the following decade: a new floor with seven en-suite rooms in 2000 (the round-roof addition that gives the building its distinctive profile), a redesigned reception in 2003-04, and three more rooms in 2005. The result is approximately 34 rooms at a price point that sits clearly in the budget-to-mid-range category.

The appeal is practical. Vogelweiderstraße 52 is not inside the tourist circuit, which is precisely the point for guests who want a calm base rather than a central address. It is 1.5 km to Mirabell Palace, fifteen minutes by bus to the railway station, and walkable to the right-bank neighbourhood. The staff speak German, English, and French, and will book taxis, store luggage, and answer questions without the transactional distance of a larger hotel. Non-smoking throughout.
