The Story

Wiener-Philharmoniker-Gasse runs between the Festival Halls and Residenzplatz, through an Altstadt zone that is almost entirely oriented toward the international visitor. Raymond Grill is the anomaly. It is a stand, not a restaurant: grilled meat, a small menu, a queue of people who work nearby or live on this side of the river.

There is no official website, no seating, and cash is the practical choice. The food is straightforward and honest: grilled meat at prices that reflect a working lunch rather than a tourist attraction. The kind of place that does not appear in hotel concierge lists but that people who spend time in Salzburg end up returning to.

For a visitor, the value is partly the food and partly the experience of seeing a different layer of the city at work, in a location where that layer is otherwise invisible.
