A sausage stand in the lane beside the Kollegienkirche, just off Universitätsplatz. The difference from every other stand: the sausages are grilled, not boiled. Locals rate it the best in the old town for exactly that reason.
The Story
The stand sells the Bosna, the curry-spiced sausage in a roll that Salzburg invented in 1949, though the original belongs to Balkan Grill Walter a few minutes north. What this place is known for is the Heeres-Currywurst, a curry sausage graded by heat on a scale of military ranks that runs from Recruit up to General. The crew has also given its tips to local children's charities for years, which is not standard street-stand behaviour.
There is almost nowhere to sit. Most people take the food to the church steps or the grass nearby and eat standing. Cash only. Order the Bosna, or pick a rank on the Currywurst and see how far up you get.
