The Kollegienkirche on Universitatsplatz is Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach's finest church in Salzburg, built 1696-1707 as the university church. The concave facade and the bench-free interior make it one of the most architecturally precise baroque spaces in the city. Entry is free.
The Story
Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach designed four major churches in Salzburg, and the Kollegienkirche, completed in 1707, is the one where his ideas arrived at their fullest resolution. Archbishop Johann Ernst von Thun commissioned it as the official church of the University of Salzburg, which Archbishop Paris Lodron had founded in 1622. The church thus sits at the intersection of two of the most consequential archbishops in the city's history, though the building itself belongs entirely to Fischer von Erlach.
The facade curves inward, a concave oval set between two towers, and this was not an accidental choice. Fischer von Erlach had already designed the Dreifaltigkeitskirche on the other side of the Salzach with a convex facade. Read together, the two buildings carry on a formal conversation across the city about what a baroque facade can do with a curved surface. Both were commissioned by the same archbishop; the dialogue was built in.
Inside, there are no benches. The French removed them during the Napoleonic occupation and they were never returned. This accident of history produced one of the finest interiors in the city: the curved walls and the deep colour of the stone read without interruption. Almost no paintings hang here either. The effect is austere in a way that feels deliberate, even though the austerity was partly imposed.
The church sits on Universitatsplatz, behind the daily green market. The contrast between the outdoor market noise and the silence inside is immediate and worth pausing over.

The Kollegienkirche is on Universitatsplatz 20, reached from Getreidegasse via any of the Durchhäuser (passage arches) in under two minutes. Open daily 10am-7pm. Free entry. Allow 15-20 minutes inside. Pairs naturally with Franziskanerkirche nearby and Salzburg Cathedral a short walk away. Visit the green market on Universitatsplatz before or after.
