The Story

Bad Gastein is one of the most theatrical places in the Austrian Alps: a valley town that climbs improbably up a steep gorge, with a famous waterfall crashing through the centre and a collection of outsized Belle Époque hotels that once served the European aristocracy. The whole place has a magnificent, slightly melancholy grandeur that draws a particular kind of traveller.
