The Story

Salzburg has a problem that the Szene solves. The city is globally identified with baroque architecture, Mozart, and the Salzburg Festival, an identity so powerful it crowds out everything else. The Szene Salzburg has been quietly pushing back against that reduction since the 1970s.

Its programming covers contemporary dance, theatre, performance art, and interdisciplinary work by Austrian and international artists who would not appear on the Landestheater or Festival stages. Some of the work is challenging; most of it is alive in ways that three-century-old repertoire cannot be. The Szene also runs its own curated festival programme alongside regular productions, so there is always something on.

For visitors interested in what Salzburg creates and argues about now, rather than what it produced for aristocratic patrons in the 1750s, the Szene is not optional. It is where the city’s contemporary cultural intelligence lives.
