Urbankeller

Snapshot

Urbankeller is a Kulturwirtshaus in a vaulted cellar that traces its origins to 1636, operating today as Salzburg’s first organically certified restaurant. It brews its own Steinbier, serves Austrian food from regional farms, and distributes its guests across five named rooms and a garden that seats 150.

The Story

The building at Schallmooser Hauptstraße 50 has held a drinking and eating establishment since the 17th century, when it served the city’s brewing guild. The current operation preserves that cellar character while layering in an organic food program unusual for Salzburg: certified organic status, in-house Steinbier brewing, and a menu that includes vegan and vegetarian plates alongside the Austrian standards.

The five rooms carry distinct personalities. The Feuerstube (35 seats) clusters around a fireplace; the Braumeisterstube (40 seats) references the brewing tradition; the Greißlerei (34 seats) echoes an old-fashioned grocery; the Gewölbe (90 seats) is the great vaulted hall where the stone arches do the decorating; and the Eisturm Bar (50 seats) with its adjacent Galerie runs as a modern backlit counterpoint to the historical rooms.

The organic certification matters beyond the obvious. It reflects a choice to run a serious food operation rather than trade on heritage atmosphere alone. The garden, on gravel and planks, extends the venue into the open air for much of the year.

Linzer Gasse is a short walk away, making this a natural stop for visitors exploring the right bank.
