The Wyndham Grand Salzburg opened in 1991 as the city’s purpose-built conference hotel, two minutes from the main railway station with 1,750 sqm of event space and 262 rooms. It is the go-to address when a Festival group or corporate delegation needs accommodation and a ballroom in the same building.

The Story

Developers broke ground in 1990 to address a gap that city planners had identified: Salzburg had historic character hotels but no large-scale conference facility. The Wyndham Grand filled that gap when it opened in 1991 on Fanny-von-Lehnert-Straße, placed deliberately close to the main railway station rather than in the more expensive Altstadt. The 262 rooms, the 16 conference rooms, and the capacity for up to 1,000 delegates made it immediately useful for the corporate and convention market that the city’s tourism board was working to grow.

Renovations in 2016 and 2018 updated the interiors and added a glass-walled conference wing designed to mirror the rhythm of Salzburg’s Baroque rooftops. Inside, walnut panels carved in a style that references 18th-century salon woodwork and chrome fittings beside hand-tiled walls create the hotel’s signature move: a modern-Baroque dialogue that avoids outright pastiche. The hotel holds the Austrian Ecolabel, Wyndham Green Level 5 certification, and the Salzburg Convention Bureau’s Green Meeting badge, with energy-monitoring dashboards that track event electricity consumption in real time.

The rooms run from a 26 sqm Comfort Double to a 78 sqm Executive Grand Suite. All have sound-proof windows, an 82-inch television, and hypo-allergenic bedding. A heated indoor pool, Finnish sauna, and 24-hour fitness centre are included with every stay. The rooftop terrace adds a panoramic city view that the Altstadt hotels charge a premium for.

Visiting

Fanny-von-Lehnert-Straße 7, two minutes’ walk from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof. The Altstadt is about a mile south, easily walkable in fifteen minutes or reachable in minutes by city bus. Mirabell and Mozart’s Birthplace are within a fifteen-minute stroll. Underground parking is available in the BOE Parkgarage, EUR 16 per day. The hotel suits travellers arriving by train, groups needing event space, and anyone who wants a full-service five-star stay at a price below the Schwarzstraße luxury tier.
