The quietest of the three Gastein Valley spa villages, without the Belle Époque hotels or the resort pricing. Dorfgastein sits at the valley entrance and shares the same radon thermal water and ski connection as Bad Gastein and Bad Hofgastein, at considerably lower cost and lower volume.

The Story

The Gastein Valley runs roughly 30 kilometres south from Pongau into the Central Alps, and most visitors head straight through Dorfgastein toward Bad Hofgastein or Bad Gastein without stopping. That is, broadly, the point. The village sits at the valley entrance at about 835 metres, farmhouse-sized against the palatial Jugendstil infrastructure further up the road.

The radon-bearing thermal water that defines the valley is present at the Felsenbad Dorfgastein: the same water, different architecture, lower admission. The ski connection runs through the Gastein-Grossarl lift network, linking the village into the broader Ski Amadé area and across to Bad Hofgastein. In winter this makes it a workable base for the whole valley without paying Bad Gastein prices. In summer the valley floor above is hiking country.

Getting there: About 85 km from Salzburg via the A10 south to Schwarzach, then the B167 into the Gastein Valley. Roughly one hour by car. Regional train to Schwarzach-St. Veit, then local bus into the valley.
Combine with: Bad Hofgastein (10 minutes further up the valley), Bad Gastein (20 minutes), the Gastein ski area, Pongau for wider valley context.
