Hof bei Salzburg sits at the point where the flat road east from Salzburg meets the Fuschlsee, a long, narrow lake framed by forested hills. Just up the shore, Schloss Fuschl stands on its own small peninsula, one of the region’s most recognizable landmarks.

The Story

The B158 east from Salzburg runs directly into Hof bei Salzburg before continuing deeper into the Salzkammergut toward Mondsee and Wolfgangsee. That position on the main road east is central to understanding what Hof is: a threshold village, the first real lake stop after the city, where the open Flachgau countryside ends and the hills begin to close in.

The Fuschlsee is smaller and less famous than its neighbors to the east, but that is part of its character. The water is clear and cold, the shoreline mostly undeveloped compared to the Wolfgangsee, and the forested slopes that rise directly from the lake give it an enclosed, almost private feeling. The views from the southern shore, where Hof sits, look north across the lake to the hills on the far bank.

Schloss Fuschl occupies a narrow peninsula on the northern shore, a few kilometers from the village center. The castle has been a hotel for decades and is not open to casual visitors, but the exterior and its setting are visible from the lake and from the road. It is one of several Salzkammergut castles that exist now primarily as luxury accommodation, and the site explains why the Fuschlsee appears in so much regional photography.

Hof itself is modest in infrastructure: a few accommodation options, some gastronomy, and the lake as the central draw. It functions well as a base for a night or two while exploring both the Fuschlsee and, further east, the larger lake circuit.

Planning

Hof bei Salzburg is about 20 km east of Salzburg on the B158, roughly a 25-minute drive. Bus connections exist from Salzburg City but are infrequent; a car or bike gives much more flexibility. The natural combination is a loop taking in the Fuschlsee, then continuing east on the B158 to Mondsee or Wolfgangsee in the same day. Summer is peak season for swimming and cycling; the lake road is busy on summer weekends. Schloss Fuschl requires a reservation for dining or accommodation; the exterior can be viewed freely from the road.
