Lake
A 10 km lake in the Salzkammergut, shared between Salzburg state and Upper Austria. Warmest and clearest of the major alpine lakes in the region. St. Gilgen is 30 minutes from Salzburg by bus; the lake and its villages are a natural extension of any Salzburg visit.
The Wolfgangsee was called Abersee in its earliest charters, until the 10th-century bishop Saint Wolfgang settled on the rocky eastern shore and eventually gave the lake his name. After his canonisation in 1052, the pilgrimage trade built St. Wolfgang into the kind of town that drew visitors from across the German-speaking world, long before Franz Joseph made the nearby Bad Ischl region the summer seat of the Habsburg court.
The lake’s modern fame arrived via operetta. Das Weiße Rössl, first performed in Berlin in 1930, set its action at the White Horse Inn on St. Wolfgang’s waterfront and turned the property into one of the most recognised addresses in Austrian popular culture. The inn still operates as a hotel, in roughly the same spot.
The Schafbergbahn, a coal-fired rack railway built in 1893, climbs from St. Wolfgang’s lakeside station to 1,782 m in about 40 minutes, passing through hanging meadows and limestone cliffs, with views on clear days stretching across 13 lakes. It is one of the last steam cog railways in Austria still running regular tourist service. A pilgrimage trail from St. Gilgen to St. Wolfgang follows the old lakeshore route, 8.9 km with a climb over the Falkenstein rock where Saint Wolfgang’s hermitage was located.
Three shore villages, one lake, and a ferry that connects them: the standard circuit from Salzburg is bus to St. Gilgen, ferry to St. Wolfgang, Schafberg summit, ferry back to Strobl, then bus or train to Salzburg.
St. Gilgen is the nearest village to Salzburg, approximately 30 minutes by bus (line 150) or car. The lake ferry (seasonal, roughly May to October) runs between St. Gilgen, St. Wolfgang, and Strobl. Swimming is good from June through September; the lake reaches 23°C in summer. Kayak, SUP, and pedal boat rental at multiple points along the shore. The Schafbergbahn runs from St. Wolfgang; tickets should be booked ahead in peak summer. The White Horse Inn dining terrace overlooks the water. A full day is needed for the ferry-Schafberg circuit; a half day suffices for St. Gilgen and a swim.
