Neumarkt am Wallersee is the main market town on the western shore of the Wallersee, the largest lake in Flachgau, about 25 km northeast of Salzburg. It is one of the Flachgau’s more complete lake communities: a functioning town with a historic center, a lake beach, and a train connection.

The Story

The Wallersee is a working lake in a region of lakes, not a famous destination like the Wolfgangsee or the Mondsee but a wide, shallow body of water that has served Salzburg’s local recreation market for generations. Neumarkt occupies the western shore, which is the more developed side of the lake, with the lakefront facing east across open water toward the opposite shore’s farms and woods.

The town carries a market designation that predates the modern era; the “Neumarkt” name signals a formal market grant from the medieval period, giving the community a civic status above its immediate neighbors. The town center reflects that history in its modest scale but structured layout, distinct from the purely agricultural villages that fill most of the northern Flachgau.

In practice, the lake is what brings visitors. The cycling circuit around the Wallersee is flat and well-suited to casual riders; Neumarkt sits on the western side of the loop, with Henndorf am Wallersee on the eastern shore providing a natural counterpart stop. The beach area is the summer focus, with swimming and some water sports. The flat terrain makes cycling the preferred way to explore the full lake.

The Salzburg Lokalbahn connection makes Neumarkt reachable without a car, though the rail station may sit slightly outside the center; check the current stop location before planning.

Planning

Neumarkt am Wallersee is roughly 25 km northeast of Salzburg, about 30 minutes by car on the B1 or B154. The Salzburg Lokalbahn provides rail access from the city. The Wallersee cycling loop, connecting Neumarkt, Henndorf am Wallersee, and the eastern shore, takes about 2 hours at a comfortable pace on flat terrain. Summer is the only season with significant visitor activity. Mattsee Destination and Obertrum am See are close enough to combine on the same day for visitors exploring the northern Flachgau lake belt.
