Hellbrunn Advent Market

The city markets are fine. Hellbrunn at Christmas is something else: a 17th-century Baroque palace garden taken over by 700 lit conifers, a Krampus procession, and a palace facade that doubles as a giant Advent calendar after dark.

The Story

Hellbrunn Palace was built in 1615 as a summer pleasure retreat, not a residence. Its Baroque gardens were designed for entertainment, complete with trick fountains that soaked unsuspecting guests at the Prince-Archbishop’s command. That spirit of irreverent spectacle has a way of surviving the centuries. When Gassner Gastronomie launched the Advent market in 2001 with six stalls, they were working with a setting that was already half theatre.

By the mid-2000s, word had spread. The stalls multiplied, trees were added until there were 700, horse-drawn carriages appeared on weekends, and the Krampus runs began drawing locals who would otherwise skip Christmas markets entirely. The palace facade now lights up window by window across the Advent season, one illuminated window each evening from mid-November, a 24-window Advent calendar scaled to a Baroque mansion.

The Krampus tradition adds something the city-center markets do not have. The Grossgmainer Krampusse run through the palace courtyard on December 4 in original wooden masks from Anif, with cow-bells, chains, and brimstone-scented smoke. December 7 has workshops and a permanent Krampuswelt exhibition for families who want to understand the legend rather than simply survive it.

Visiting

• When: Mid-November to 24 December. Closed Mondays.
• Hours: Tue-Fri 1 pm-8 pm; weekends and bank holidays 10 am-8 pm; December 24 closes at 2 pm. Free entry after 7 pm.
• Cost: €8 (includes hot-drink voucher worth ~€4.80). Children under six free. Free entry on December 24.
• Getting there: Bus No. 25 from central Salzburg, or by bike along the Hellbrunner Allee (~20 minutes).
• Tips: Evening visits are visually different from daytime. Arrive early on December 4 for the Krampus run. Horse-drawn carriage rides available on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
