One of the greatest artists of the late Gothic period, and a man who died in Salzburg. Michael Pacher's masterpiece, the St. Wolfgang Altarpiece (completed 1481), stands in the Pfarrkirche St. Wolfgang in the Salzkammergut and is considered one of the supreme achievements of late Gothic art in Central Europe.
The altarpiece's carved and painted panels combine Gothic intensity with a Renaissance mastery of perspective that was extraordinary for its time and place. Every visitor to St. Wolfgang sees his work.
