The Felsenreitschule is a theater carved directly into the Moenchsberg cliff face, which means the backstage wall is living rock and three tiers of 17th-century arcades form the auditorium. It was originally built in 1693 as a summer riding school for the Archbishop's horses.

Believed to be the oldest existing open-air stone theatre north of the Alps. The first Italian opera north of the Alps was performed here in 1617, under the patronage of Markus Sittikus. A natural rock grotto shaped into a theatre at the edge of the Hellbrunn park.
