Hotel

Arcotel Castellani

Snapshot

A four-star Austrian-owned design hotel south of Salzburg’s historic core, built around a 17th-century priory estate with a Baroque chapel and a 400-year-old linden tree in the garden. The setting is residential and quiet, yet only 1.5 km from the Altstadt.

The Story

Most hotels in Salzburg wear their history as decoration. At Arcotel Castellani, the history is the structure. The main building dates to 1642, when a local estate was established on what is now Alpenstraße 6. The Baroque St. Josephskapelle from 1677 and an Old Parish House from 1712 were added later, and all three heritage-listed buildings remain standing today, connected by a glass walkway to a modern 2002 annex that brought the room count to around 153.

The linden tree in the garden is roughly 400 years old. Events, weddings, and ceremonies happen beneath it, and the chapel seats 40 inside with room for more outside in fair weather. It is an unusual combination: a working four-star hotel that is also a listed historic compound, where the restaurant floor is original brick and the breakfast terrace opens onto a garden that has been here since the Baroque era.

The hotel is part of the Austrian-owned ARCOTEL group, led by Dr. Renate Wimmer. The group operates around 11 properties across Austria and Germany under the positioning “Das MEHR Hotel,” meaning a hotel that does more than the standard city property. Green Key certification and on-site EV charging reflect a more recent set of priorities. The design throughout blends exposed stone with cherry and nut wood panelling, keeping the historic fabric legible without making the rooms feel like a museum.

The Alpenstraße neighbourhood is residential and calmer than the tourist core, which suits visitors who prefer a quieter base. Public transport connects reliably to the Altstadt and the main station. The airport is roughly 6 km away.
