The Story

Gasthof Schloss Aigen sits on Schwarzenbergpromenade in the Aigen district, on the quiet, upmarket southern edge of Salzburg, and its main asset is the beer garden in the grounds of the Schloss Aigen estate. In warm months, a long lunch here has the quality of stepping outside the tourist city entirely: the estate grounds provide a sense of space and calm that the Altstadt cannot offer, the cooking is traditional Austrian done properly, and the clientele is local enough that the atmosphere feels genuine rather than staged. The Aigen district itself is worth knowing: quiet, residential, removed from the central concentration of visitors. The Gasthof is reachable by bus, or by a pleasant walk or cycle south from the Altstadt along the Salzach. For visitors who want a meal with a different quality of setting, this is one of the better choices outside the centre. Pairs well with a longer excursion toward Gaisberg.
