Gollinger Wasserfall

A 75 m double-cascade waterfall above Golling an der Salzach, 35 km south of Salzburg. Small admission fee. The 15-minute forest walk to the base is easy; the spray at the bottom is not optional. Best in May and June.

The Story

The Gollinger Wasserfall is not Krimml. It lacks the scale and the reputation. What it has instead is proximity and atmosphere: 35 km from Salzburg’s Altstadt, a 15-minute forest path from the parking lot, and a base where the spray soaks you regardless of the season.

The falls drop 75 m in two stages. The upper cascade is narrower and steeper; the lower opens into a wider fan. Both stages feed a short gorge cut into the limestone above Golling an der Salzach, the same limestone spine that continues south through the Salzach valley toward Werfen. The Schwarzache stream behind it drains from the plateau of Hagengebirge above; in late May after a warm spell, the flow is genuinely powerful.

The combination that works best from Salzburg: train or car to Golling, waterfall first, then Burg Golling in the village (the castle overlooks the Salzach from a wooded spur), then south through the valley past the Salzachöfen gorge toward Werfen and the Eisriesenwelt. This is a corridor trip, not a single-destination day, and the Gollinger Wasserfall is the natural northern anchor of it.

The path from the ticket booth is well maintained but slippery near the base from mist. Sturdy shoes matter. The site is cash only at the entrance kiosk.

Visiting

Access from Salzburg by car via A10 (exit Golling) or by train to Golling-Abtenau station. Ticket booth at Wasserfallstrasse 23; small admission fee (approx. 3-5 EUR adults, cash only). Open May 1 to October 31, from 9:00. The path from booth to falls base is 600 m, roughly 15 minutes. Slippery near the falls; closed footwear essential. Most dramatic in May and June. Combine with Burg Golling (5-minute drive into the village) and the Salzachöfen gorge (10 minutes south). Full day combination extends to Eisriesenwelt at Werfen, another 20 km south.
