Village in a dramatic gorge 45 minutes south of Salzburg. Home to Festung Hohenwerfen, a 12th-century hilltop fortress, and the gateway to the Eisriesenwelt, the world's largest accessible ice cave. The Sound of Music Meadow Werfen on the Bischling plateau is the location of the famous opening scene. One of the most rewarding day trips from Salzburg.
The Story
The Salzach valley south of Salzburg narrows suddenly near Werfen, and the village sits right inside that narrowing. Limestone cliffs rise on both sides. The fortress appears before the village does: Festung Hohenwerfen on its 155-metre rock spur, angular and formidable, built in the 1070s when an archbishop needed to defend the Alpine pass and the archbishopric's southern flank.
The castle was expanded repeatedly. The 16th-century Italian-style bastions and the 1573 central keep give it the compact, artillery-ready profile still visible today. It was seized by peasants during the 1525 uprising and retaken. It served as a prison under Habsburg rule. Today it is one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in Austria, with an active falconry programme and views over the gorge that justify the climb alone.
Above the valley, inside the limestone of the Tennengebirge, the Eisriesenwelt is a different kind of spectacle entirely. Over 40 kilometres of passages, the first kilometre of which are accessible to visitors, filled with ice formations that persist year-round because cold air is trapped in the cave system. It is the largest ice cave open to the public in the world. The guided tour takes about 75 minutes and requires warm clothing regardless of season.
The landscape around Werfen, specifically the open plateau above the valley, is where the opening helicopter sequence of The Sound of Music was filmed. The meadow and mountain backdrop that opens the film are here, not in Salzburg.
Planning
About 45 minutes by train or car from Salzburg, south on the A10 to the Werfen exit. The fortress and the ice cave are separate visits on opposite sides of the valley; allow a full day if combining both. The Eisriesenwelt requires booking in advance during peak summer months. The cave is closed in winter. The fortress operates year-round. Bus connections from Werfen station to both sites are available but timed to tour schedules; check in advance.
